Carnevale

Spring is here once again, and we are  celebrating this time of renewal with our Carnevale fundraiser! The price of admission is $5 per individual ($6 at the door) and $20 per family. We have many fun activities planned including face painting, mask making, singing, dancing, and other games.

We will top off the afternoon with our special guest, world renowned artist and musician Linda Severt, performing "Juggletunes," which includes acrobatic acts, astounding stunts, puppetry, and instrumentals.

Our Silent Auction is shaping up to be quite extraordinary, as we have received generous contributions from The Waterfront Seafood Grill, Banya 5 Day Spa, Whole Life Yoga, Panera Bread, Seattle Repertory Theatre, Ivar's, The Triple Door, Cafe Javasti, Bombay Grill, VAIN Hair Salon, and The Seattle Art Museum just to name a few! In addition, members of our community have been kind enough to offer 4 tickets to a Mariners' game, an afternoon of sailing, and two hours on a radio morning show!

There will be fine Italian food provided by Lucchese Pasteria available for purchase, as well as baked goods provided by MMLCC parents.  

We look forward to a fun filled and memorable day and hope that you'll be able to join us at the Sunset Hill Community Center, 3003 NW 66th Street, Seattle 98117, from 1:00 - 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 10th 2008.

King County Councilmember Larry Phillips' Visit to Casa Maria

On January 18, 2008 Councilmember Phillips visited the school and presented Casa Maria Montessori with a grant check of $3000 to fund non-violent communication programs and workshops. Read more about Councilmember Phllips.

Seattle Celebration of the Montessori Centennial: Education in the 21st Century

The Ballard High School Department of Family and Consumer Sciences and the non-profit Maria Montessori Language and Cultural Center are hosting a Montessori Centennial Banquet to be held in the Ballard High School Commons from 5:30-8PM on May 23rd, 2007. We are celebrating the opening of the first Montessori school in Rome, Italy and recognizing public and private Montessori Schools across Washington State. We hope this event will draw 100-250 teachers and supporters of Montessori in the Seattle area and beyond.

In addition to hosting many well established programs, we will shed light on a unique Montessori model at Ballard High School in Seattle. In the Casa Maria Montessori Lab School students 15-18 years old discover the Montessori developmental approach to educating children. As they begin to sort out their career choices they may consider opportunities in the early childhood education field. Dr. Montessori's genius created a teaching method focused on the science of human development. She trained educators to observe and understand the needs of children in successive stages of life.

In order to capture the explosion of information on early childhood development and to mark this event we are inviting Montessori schools and training centers to share the Montessori vision by bringing a book to the banquet; to enrich the Ballard High School library and create a permanent legacy. Our focus will be on books by and about Dr. Montessori and books that will strengthen resources for high school students considering careers in Montessori education, psychology, parenting, social sciences, environmental design, family nutrition, health and peaceful relationships, early language acquisition and current research in contemporary fields of human development. Each book donated will represent a whole school or organization, reflecting the impact Montessori education has had on our region.

Non-violent Communication and Marshall Rosenberg, PhD

One of the goals of the Seattle Public Schools’ Community Alignment Initiative is “to maximize children’s learning and success” by bringing community resources into public schools. With this goal in mind, the MMLCC Lab School has arranged, together with Eileen Knobbs, head of Ballard’s Family and Consumer Sciences department, for Dr. Marshall Rosenberg to speak at Ballard High.

Dr. Rosenberg, a clinical psychologist, founded The Center for Nonviolent Communication in 1984 and is the author of Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Compassion. He lectures, through puppetry, on mediation and communication skills in support of the peaceful integration of public schools. (For more information, go to www.cnvc.org ).

In the Fall of 2005, we were granted funding so that we could have the Puget Sound Network for Compassionate Communication’s (PSNCC) specialists work with our high school interns here at Ballard and give presentations to the Family and Consumer Sciences’ Child Development class. We gave the student interns instruction in the use of the giraffe and jackal puppets so they can show our MMLCC children ways to express their feelings and needs. 

Fortunately, we were able to continue this work in the Fall of 2006. We are currently looking for our fall 2007 funding in the form of a grant.
